March/April Registration deadline for admitted participants
6-13th August S4 2023
This event has a limited number of places, and therefore we will require an application prior to registration. All applications will be reviewed after the application deadline. We will select the applicants based on the strength of their submission, including their desire to attend the event and the relevance of their research to speleothem science.
S4 2023 will consist of three days of lectures and workshops from experts in the field of speleothem science at the Institute of Geosciences at the University of São Paulo, Brazil. Participants will also get the chance to present their own research to fellow participants and the experts during poster sessions. This will be followed by a 3-day field trip to PETAR (Parque Estadual Turistico do Alto Riberia), a beautiful region renowned for its caves.
Preliminary lecture topics (subject to change)
Stable isotopes (oxygen and carbon)
Cave monitoring + speleothem sampling (in the field)
Dating (U and Pb)
Speleothems and climate models
Karst geomorphology and hydrology (in the field)
Preliminary workshops (subject to change)
Time series analysis
Professional development panel
Cave photography (in the field)
If admitted, applicants will be asked to pay a registration fee. The registration fee will include lodging, some meals and snacks, as well as the field trip. Participants will need to secure funding for travel to and from Brazil and some of their meals during the event.
We do not currently have an estimate for the registration fee. As a very rough estimate, the fee for the last S4 in Romania was ~$550 USD. We should have a better estimate of the registration fee by late January.
The S4 committee is pleased to announce that we have secured funds to provide financial support to our attendees. Applicants can indicate their intention to apply for aid on the general application form. Once applicants are admitted (decision in late January/early February), they will be able to apply for financial aid through a separate application process. More information about the amount and type of aid will be available at that time.
During S4 2023, we will follow the current COVID-19 safety regulations that are in place at the time, and all participants are required to do the same. We will keep you updated with the available information here.
